Ibarra - Salinas Route on the Liberty Train
Ride the Train of Liberty
As the locomotive chugs through the rolling hills of northern Ecuador, an otherworldly vista opens up before your eyes. Frosty volcanoes, raging rivers, sunny meadows and windswept Andean vistas appear and disappear before your eyes as the train's rounds bend and passes through darkened tunnels. At the end of the ride, Afro-Ecuadorians welcome you to their town with a traditional song and dance as well as typical food. It's the Liberty Train, one of Ecuador's most unforgettable experiences!
The trip starts off in Ibarra where it proceeds to Salinas as it passes by bridges and tunnels all built by shovel and pick-axe. On the way, one can expect to witness beautiful mountain views, waterfalls and even a bridged section located right above the Ambi River. Upon arrival to Salinas, named for its natural salt deposits, travelers will be surprised by the ambiance of the town as it differs from that of the communities in Ibarra with its rich Afro-Ecuadorian culture.
